My quad is set up like that. In practice the inside wheel tends to
skid slightly each time I pedal when cornering at low speed if there's
any loose material at all. Or sometimes if there's not. I'm not sure
why if happens, but it does mitigate the gearing effect (which is
noticeable). Despite that it's still the front tyres that wear out
faster than the rear ones.
I have to say that this style of two wheel drive works a treat. It's
heavy (over 1kg) and expensive (the freewheels in their industrial
bearings are ~$AUS500 each) but it hasn't broken yet and it
dramatically improves traction. For that matter, the Rohloff hasn't
broken yet either :)
