The Velocar sociable did not have a rear live axle, and thus did not need a differential. It simply had two independent drives!

One problem with having a clutch or freewheel to each rear wheel to obtain two wheel drive is that it increases the gearing as you 
turn, making it harder to turn sharp corners at low speed.
