*Apeldoorn, 28 september 2009
*Recumbent record-challenge weekend in Apeldoorn on October 17 and 18
*An international cycling event will take place in the Omnisport velodrome
in Apeldoorn on the weekend of October 17 and 18, focusing on a number of
very prominent record-holders and world champions. Riders from Germany,
France, America and naturally the Netherlands will attempt to break the
existing speed records. The weekend promises to be humming with activity and
adrenaline.
*New records
*The record weekend event is being held for the first time this year and
will almost certainly produce new record speeds. The ultimate goal is to
surpass the existing "open" UCI (International Cyclists’ Union) records,
using the fastest unstreamlined and partially-streamlined recumbents
currently available. The riders are aiming particularly at the records for
one hour, 1000 meters, and 200 meters. The velodrome is being set up
specially for this event.
*Impressive list of participants
*The list of riders is impressive. In addition to a preliminary selection,
a committee has determined which riders will have a chance to make a record
attempt, which will ensure the quality of the participants. One rider with
an excellent chance for a new record is Barbara Buatois. Earlier this year
in Tilburg, this Frenchwoman took the women’s World Championship title.
Later, in America, she broke the European record for the 200-meter flying
start, with 121 kilometers per hour, becoming not only the fastest woman,
but surpassing the existing European men’s record (Damjan Zabovnik, 120.640
kph).
*Free admission
*For the public and for cyclists, this event will be an extraordinary
experience. There will be power meters mounted on the bikes, so that
everyone can see how much force is exerted and can get a picture of how the
record attempts are going.
The public is heartily welcome. Admission is free!
