Fierce Fight for the Title in Tilburg
Slade remains the recumbent world champion
Reigning recumbent world champion Steven Slade (GB) has successfully
defended his title in Tilburg. In a fierce three-day battle, Belgian
challenger Erik Marynissen fell a few points short of unseating the speedy
Brit.
In the women’s races, 2007 champion Barbara Buatois won back the title which
British rider Claire King had taken last year in the World Championships in
England.
About two hundred racers competed in the Recumbent World Championships,
which were held from July 3 through 5 in the Reeshof district of Tilburg,
re-christened “Race-Hof” for the event.
The Cycle Vision exposition, taking place at the same time as the World
Championships, was a great success. Visitors were struck by the many
innovative bikes from Dutch manufacturers as well as the four-person
Quattrocycle, and a foldable trike from Challenge. In addition, there were
many diverse prototypes of new bikes in the races, such as the Strada from
Velomobiel.nl, a new M5 racer, and the Zockra carbon racer.
Schwalbe was this year’s chief sponsor of the World Championships/Cycle
Vision. The Dutch recumbent association, NVHPV, received support from the
co-sponsor Schwalbe.
Cycle Vision is an annual event, a combination of exposition, test-track,
and races. This year the Netherlands was also the host of the Recumbent
World Championships, which are held each year in a different country. Other
countries in this rotation are the U.S., England, Belgium, Germany, France,
Denmark, and Austria. The Netherlands ordinarily host the event one year
out of fourteen.
The championships took place in Tilburg as part of the 200th anniversary
celebration of the city. “Despite some problems that arose when not all of
the promises were honored, we were happy with the facilities that were
available to us in the city. It is unique to be able to hold this kind of
recumbent event on the public streets,” according to a spokesman for the
organization.
