The directional prop has its uses, it only works
with a flexible shaft. The setup is heavier than with
a rudder or dipping rudders, the steering arm has
to be strong and the steering lever is longer as it
takes more effort to push the shaft side to side.
The advantages are doing minor course changes
without the rudder being turned which slows you
down. Also for manouvering at low speed it works
well. The boat has a bigger turning radius but if I
lean into the turn and dig in the outrigger I can turn
a bit tighter.
