The new boat does not sit quite flat on the bean but the shaft is  
strong enough to allow it to sit on it.  It just springs out of the  
way.  You would not want to sit on on the beach as they may bend the  
shaft.

With your higher ratio you can use a smaller prop with shaft coming  
out even further aft.

I think if you make a seat and torque box like mine you could  
permanently mount the gearbox.  There is a lot of weight in bottom  
bracket, chain, chainring, sprocket and small box.  I doubt not much  
less than the Involute box.  It is just that the Involute box is a  
concentrated lump.  The most awkward part with V15 is the position of  
the outriggers when folded.
